OUR HISTORY

Intsebenziswno High School is located at Browns Farm Informal Settlement in Philippi. The school started 2002 and it has achieved a lot for the school its age.
The learners of our school are faced with the assortment of challenges which, inter alia, include child-headed homesteads, unemployment, poverty, crime, gang violence as well as chronic diseases.
Intsebenziswano was basically initiated by three former UWC students (graduates) who have just finished their studies and joined the list of unemployed graduates. Since they reside in Philippi they observed that there was a whole range of roaming around learners who could neither be accommodated by Sinethemba High nor Vuyiseka due to the fact that both schools had overflowing numbers of learners. They then decided to approach the Principal of Bongolwethu Primary for temporal accommodation to summon all the learners from Philippi area who were turned away from the above mentioned secondary school because of the mentioned problems.
Having sorted out the place to summon these learners in terms of using Bongolwethu School premise/yard not the classes the three educators embarked on plan B, that to network with relevant community leaders, parents as well as other unemployed teachers and learners. Despite their poor financial status they managed to have access to computer in order to print out notices to the parents and learners who are still looking for places in schools to meet at Bongolwethu and seek for solution. They then invited unemployed professional educators who are residing in Philippi to join them because they have released the task needed collaborating teamwork. All these efforts were initiated in January 2002 exactly two weeks after the schools were opened. That alone indicates that the aim was not to drain learners out of the two existing secondary schools in Philippi but to address the problem of learners who were roaming around our community and would be exposed to existing high rate of crime if the system could not accommodate them, the main aim was to keep these learners off the streets and by so doing crime would be minimised.
By the end of January that exactly two weeks after the mission was embarked there were already about Two Hundred learners and that really proved that there was a great need for another secondary school in our area.
We had tremendous support from the Principal of Sinethemba and his staff who were never tired of giving us advice and encouragement and guidance as how to contact relevant protocol. Some of the community members also gave us a lot of support. After all that our learners were summoned to Sinethemba by the EMDC Director Mr Eugine Daniels and Department Officials who verified their reports, testimonials and transfers. We negotiated with the Sinethemba staff and agree upon the merging of the two schools. This decision was defied by both Sinethemba RCL members, the majority of the learners as well their parents and so this effort also failed to materialise. At this stage the Chief Director, EMDC Director and Circuit Manager intervened and came up with a solution to approach Masivuke Principal and SGB. They agreed upon platoon system with Intsebenziswano and offered us ten classes altogether. The Intsebenziswano was therefore established on the 13 May 2002.
The caretaker principal was Ms Lukele. Mr Qaba was appointed as permanent Principal until 2013. Presently the school is headed by Mrs Sam who resumed duties in 2016.
